Question about summer huts

Hiya hut trippers, cool site! I realize it’s all about winter huts, so apologies for going off topic, but since y’all seem to know a lot about mountain huts … wondering if the US has any hike-in summer mountain huts of the Alpine full-service (staffed, meals provided) variety? Only ones I know about are the Appalachian Mountain Club’s huts in the White Mountains of NH, and Yosemite’s high sierra camps. Very curious if there are any others.

Hey @MentholMoose – thanks for the kind words and for reaching out!

Hut Tripper started with an emphasis on winter backcountry huts that catered to ski touring and splitboarding, but many of the huts we have listed do have Summer operations! While we don’t detail that at the moment, it’s something we definitely look forward to adding in the future (huts for backpackers, mountain bikers, etc.)

To answer your question about summer mountain huts that offer a full-service offering like you’d expect in other parts of the world, below are a few that come to mind!

  • Red Mountain Alpine Lodge
    • RMAL whole lodge rentals, private room rentals or loft space rental (which are booked by the bed). All prices include a meal package (aprés soup/appetizer, dinner & dessert, and full american breakfast).
  • OPUS Hut
    • Similarly, OPUS offers whole lodge rentals, private room rentals, or by-the-bed rentals. All individuals staying are required to add a meal package, which includes apres soup, dinner and breakfast the next morning. For what it’s worth, we stayed at OPUS last season and can vouch for the quality/comfort of the hut, the access to the alpine, as well as the food/drink offering
  • Sun Valley Huts
    • Through their partners at Sun Valley Guides, summer opportunities are available at Sun Valley Huts’ Coyote Yurt and Pioneer Yurt (Yurts: Pioneer Yurt — Sun Valley Guides). Keep in mind that catering is only offered to groups with 3+ guests, at which point the nightly rate includes the hut rental, a guide, a private cook, gourmet food, and a porter.

As you’ve probably noticed in your research, our hut culture in the states doesn’t quite cater to the always-on / staffed nature of some of the huts in places like The Alps. But – we’re hoping to do more research into the summer side of hut trips so we can better answer these questions.

If you find any others, please do share them here for future reference! Would love to hear where you decide to go :raised_hands:
